Every child learns at a different pace. Some can cut straight lines at three and some could care less. Some can write their name in preschool and some might take a while to learn how. Some kids make friends really easily, others need some extra help. All of our children are special and unique and need us in so many ways that are the same (food, shelter, love) and so many other ways that are very specific to the child. Every person, every family, every parent, and every child is different. Nevertheless, there are some things that we shouuld be striving for and working towards throughout the different ages and stages of their young lives. Time

In this day and age, everyone seems to need more time. People have pondered if we could make our days longer. I've heard our true length of days described as 36 hours and not 24 to explain just how much we actually get done in one day. If you are a mom of one child or five you know what I am speaking of and you know just how much you get done each and every day. Time is important. The things you do with your time are important: washing dishes, going to work, feeding your family, cleaning, grocery shopping, laundry, soccer games- you name it- you do it! It is all important and all pretty necessary. Time can be our friend and sometimes it seems to work against us. The question is- how much time do we spend pleasing our Lord? How much of each of our days (and our children's days) is actually spent with God, honoring God, FOR God? As you go about your mommy-duties pay attention to what you are doing. Is what I'm doing pleasing to God? Do I speak to my family in a way that God would want me to? Am I doing my best at being a person that God would want me to be and showing my children how to do the same?
The more time we spend with God the more opportunity He has to speak to us and give us direction. Try to think about your time and if you aren't already, make some for your Lord.

We will be having an Easter theme for our meeting this coming week! Our Moppets will get to have an Easter Egg hunt while us moms get to feast and enjoy (please be sure they bring their own Easter basket or bag for their eggs).

It would help us out tremendously if you would be sure to respond to our emailed E-vite invitation so that we have a correct head count for everyone (the kids especially as we know we will have some extra young'ins due to Spring Break). Older children will be encouraged to have fun helping out with the younger children.

Tough Stuff

There is a time in all of our lives when someone we know dies. It's inevitable. It's the circle of life. It's the end of a book. Call it what you will; it happens.

In these times of difficulty we not only have to remember to take care of our children's needs and emotions, but our own as well. Knowing what to expect in the grieving process can help, and articles such as: Coping with Death and Grief from Focus on the Family often give us some much needed information and insight.

Of course, because we are moms, we always worry about how things effect our children and family. Sometimes we don't know what to say to our children or how to help them understand what happened or how to process their feelings about it... The same great Christian resource also has an article to help walk you through how to help your child with their grief: How to Help Your Child Grieve.

You may not need these resources now, but as we know, there will be a time that you will and it can only help to be just a little more prepared.

Separation Anxiety is Contagious
You Catch it from Your Children By Tracey Solomon
A tsunami of tears started when we reached the doors. His started at the idea of our separating, mine at the idea of not separating. It was the first day I had: brushed my teeth, put on make-up AND worn shoes, all at the same time, in almost two weeks. I knew if I could just make it past the next few minutes, I’d be past the painful detachment and rewarded with a cup of coffee without a teething ring dunker. I might even get to eat a real breakfast. I’d also be able to at least hear other people speak in multi-syllable words, even if I couldn’t return in kind until the coffee hit my system.
I was desperate for a break, and I felt like the world’s worst mother. Thoughts arrived with the tears: How could I leave a crying baby like that? He needs his mommy! I’m the one he wants. If I don’t get some big people time soon, I will lose my mind. A crazy mom is not what my baby needs. I used to be on the other side of the door, when I was a teacher I always got them to calm down, eventually. He has to do this, so do I. The thoughts battled. In the end, guilt lost, reason won.
I remember the caregiver lovingly prying my 2-year-old from my arms. “Go on into the meeting, he’ll be fine.” As I watched the tears and baby snot (aka: liquid mommy guilt) run down his face, I had my doubts about the “fine” part. But, I went anyways.
I could hear him crying as I made my way down the hall. I felt torn in half, I felt like running. The problem was, I wanted to run in both directions. I wanted to run to my crying baby and I wanted to run to the MOPS meeting, where I knew I needed to go.
I stood for a minute in the middle of the hallway. Then, I saw another mother met at the door of the toddler room by the same tsunami. The mom turned around, our eyes met. I smiled. She smiled. “Who do you think will last the longest today?” I asked her. She laughed: “My bet is on yours.” I laughed: “Funny, my bet, is on YOURS.”
We walked to the meeting room together. We went to our discussion tables. We drank full, hot cups of coffee without our children. In unison, our heads turned, every time we heard the door open. We both hoped it wasn’t a caregiver coming to tell us the crying hadn’t stopped. Every once in a while our eyes met, we smiled. We survived.
It’s been years since that day. I have no idea whose child lasted the longest. But, this morning, at 6:19 am that same child, who had to be pried from my arms, walked to the school bus to go take his high school finals. Without shedding a tear. I enjoyed two full, hot cups of coffee. I even got a chance to read a real book, without pictures.
Separation anxiety is a phase. Every child goes through it, every childcare book covers it. Every mother knows about it. What I didn’t know was that it’s contagious. Not just to other children … but to their mothers. I know, because I caught it. I was anxious for a separation from my child!
Looking back, I’m glad I separated. Even though it was hard and heart wrenching. I know I did the right thing. Besides, could I really get away with sitting next to him in his Psych class? Maybe. But, do I really want to be that mom? No. And he doesn’t want to be that kid, either.
Separation anxiety. It’s not terminal. You can make it. Keep walking down the hall, together.

Do you listen or just hear?

As you yell across the house for the fiftieth time to gather your family to the dinner table (your one attempt this month to have some sort of "normal" dinner time) you realize that your attempts... at least these particular ones, are pointless. Yelling doesn't get anything done. Yelling only annoys yourself and the people around you. In fact, your ears are ringing from your own voice echoing through your head. A headache ensues. Why aren't these people (husband, children, etc) listening?! After all, you are the one doing the work so they can eat. All you are doing is caring for them and even still they don't listen. It's ok. You're not alone. It seems silly but it often takes an extra step to get the attention of the people you feel most comfortable with and vice versa. Instead of going hoarse from yelling, put the phone away, leave the microwave or stovetop for a second (turn them off if you need) and walk to each person. Look your loved one in the eye, touch them on the shoulder, give them a smile, and ask them to "come to the table please...now". Your husband and children may think you have completely lost your marbles at this point but, it works much more often than not.

Just as we try to care for our family, our Heavenly Father tries to care for us and communicate with us. Sometimes we don't hear Him. Sometimes we hear Him but don't listen. Sometimes, and unfortunately, maybe the least frequent outcome of all, we hear Him and we listen. The Holy Spirit may try to whisper to you by tapping at your heart when you are trying to decide wether or not your teenage daughter should be allowed to go to a particular party. The Lord may try to gently guide you when it comes to deciding which apartment to rent or which house to buy. We often think that instances of life threatening illness, accidents, even death is God's wake up call. We may think that the hardest moments of our lives may be His trying to shake us from our focus that is NOT Him. I like to think that it is in the moments of despair that He might walk up to you and touch your shoulder and grant you peace. In those moments when it feels like it is you against the world, He reminds you that is not the case.

Next time you find yourself ready to rip your hair out or scream at the top of your lungs out of frustration, remember that you're not alone. Not only that, but instead of focusing on what is wrong, turn your focus on Him. What would God have me do at this moment? Would He want me to handle things differently? How can I foster His peace in myself and in my family and home? I assure you, there will be moments- good, bad, and in-between. What will you put between you and that moment? You can put ego, pride, anger, sadness, revenge between you and the moment... or you can do everything you can to put HIM there. Be the child that listens and not just hears.

If you have someone in your life who loves you... who is special... who makes you smile... or someone you know is and will always be there for you when you need it... make it a point of telling them how much they mean to you.

If you know someone who always helps others... lends a hand... knows just what to say... thank them for all they do.

If you have a friend that you care about... that you're comfortable with... that knows what you're thinking just by looking at you... give them an extra hug and remind them how much they mean to you.

This holiday season is a time to be thankful... and a time to show our thanks and love to those who are special in our lives. Do it now. People appreciate being remembered and sometimes they need your thoughtfulness right when you give it to them. Don't put it off. This time of the year is the perfect time to do it and a good excuse to be sentimental.

Pistachio Pecan Party Cookies:

1/2 C powdered sugar
1/2 C unsalted butter, softened
1/2 C oil
1 teaspoon almond extract
2 eggs
1 (3 1/2 oz) pkg instant pistachio pudding U pie filling mix
1 to 3 drops green food color
2 C flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/2 C chopped pecans
Sugar

In large bowl, combine powdered sugar, butter, oil, almond extract, eggs
pudding mix and food color; mix well. Lightly spoon flour into measuring cup; level off.
Add flour, baking soda, cream of tartar and salt; mix well.
Stir in pecans. Cover with plastic wrap; refrigerate 1 hour.

Heat oven to 375. Shape dough into 1-inch balls; roll in sugar. Place 2
inches apart on un-greased cookie sheets.
Bake for 10-15 minutes or until edges are lightly
golden brown.
Immediately remove from cookie sheets.
4 1/2 dozen cookies.

Holiday Heartache

The holidays remind us of yummy feasts, sparkling drinks, gatherings of family and loved-ones... But for more of us than we realize... it brings a feeling of loneliness and hurt. We often go through the day smiling and offering our holiday wishes and big smiles that take more effort to muster than it would be to sit down and cry...

Know this day that you are not alone. Know that just as we feel alone even when surrounded by people that JESUS has felt that feeling. He has felt the ultimate betrayal and feeling of being alone while surrounded by sinners many years ago. It is this time of year that we are to celebrate His coming to this earth and living a life in this sinful world only to be brutally torn and ripped apart.

I ask that for the moment you turn your eyes to God and not at your circumstances... Lift your head towards the heavens and no longer on your empty room or your financial burdens... Offer your heart in open hands to your Lord Jesus who came here as a baby, grew into a man, faced temptation and ridicule, and died an unreal death all for YOU. Praise Jesus. Thank you for your ultimate sacrifice. Thank you for coming to this sinful world.

Thank you Lord Jesus for my breath, my heartbeat, my soul... Thank you for my child.

Thank you for the opportunity we have every year to celebrate your birth.

Healthy Foods and Nutrients: A look back at our last meeting...

Taking a look back at our last meeting, I wanted to share some of the information that Dr. Diane had taught us in case we forgot to take notes or weren't able to make it. You can also take a look at her website 4bonehealth.org.

It is important to check with your own health care provider whenever dealing with vitamins and health, but Dr. Diane gave us some great tips, facts, and explanations. We all know that we should eat right and exercise regularly. Did we know or realize that soy milk is not a good source of calcium? Did we know that broccoli is not a vegetable that contains large amounts of calcium? Did you know that the best kind of flour to use for breads is unbleached, enriched flour? Did you know what the nutrition information labels really mean on the food that we buy? As my daughter would say, us moms need to be "super sleuths" when it comes to our grocery shopping. One of our speakers, Arlene Pellicane, suggested to us that we keep our cupboards clear of junk food because our home is the only place we can truly police. With that said, we need to know what the labels really mean to us, our bodies, and our children's bodies. Two great websites with a plethora of information about nutrition are: nutrition.gov and ds.od.nih.gov.

We took a look at what kinds of things we are putting in our own bodies and what foods we are allowing our children to put into theirs. Calcium, of course is one of the key ingredients in bone health, however, we often forget or don't know about the need for vitamin D in conjunction with the calcium. Dr. Diane recommends a Vitamin D supplement for babies that are exclusively breastfeeding. She also believes that even though we live in sunny San Diego, we cannot rely on the sun for our vitamin D except for 3-4 months in the summer but, even then, if you or your children are wearing sunblock, the sunblock will also block the vitamin D from your body's absorption. Furthermore, salt (more than 2/3 of a teaspoon per day) and soda pop also play roles in keeping our bodies from getting the calcium that it needs... not just us, but our kids as well.

Be a good mom detective when it comes to grocery shopping. It may take more time, but it is well worth it for you and your family in the long run: Grab the bread that has calcium in it rather than the one that does not. Rinse your canned green beans before you cook them to get rid of the extra sodium (salt) in it. Make your own pizza before popping a frozen one in the oven (you may remember the frozen pizza item had the most salt of all the things we compared on the table at our meeting). Eat leafy greens like kale and collard greens for some extra bio-available calcium. If you are lactose intolerant, grab some yogurt (you should be ok eating that). Last but not least, remember that young children's bodies do not absorb calcium from supplements like we do, so, find the foods with the right "stuff" in them for a healthy child and a healthy you!

Prioritizing

It's been nearly 24 hours since our meeting. During our study, "An Introduction to Momology", there was a particular point that has been coming up in my life over and over again: Prioritize.
As mothers we have learned to very easily prioritize our children before other things. What about God? What about our husbands? What about ourselves? Listening to the podcast Focus on the Family: Balancing the Roles of Wife and Mother, it reminds us that we cannot engulf ourselves in our children too much because in doing so, we lose ourselves. What will happen 20 years from now when your children are all grown up and you find yourself sitting on the couch next to a stranger (your husband) or looking in the mirror and not knowing who you are anymore?
I know that I have consciously chosen God to be first in my life however, it doesn't always ring true in my daily decision making. I know that I need to take care of myself in order to be a good mom but, there are days and even weeks that go by that I don't. Part of what I love about MOPS is that it is a place where moms can share, relax, and let your frustrations out with other women that understand and have experienced the same things that you are going through.
Take time to prioritize. Take time for yourself. Take time to have supportive relationships with other moms. Don't have time for these things? Make it. You have the time for the things that are a priority to you. You do. As my grandma would say, "the dishes will keep till the morning". If you need to: cancel volunteering for a day, get take out instead of cooking dinner, miss your nephew's soccer game, vacuum next week, schedule a date night, take a night off, and say "no" once in a while. Use that time to focus on your relationship with God, read the Word, get your hair done, have a piece of chocolate, take a walk, go to the beach... Do what you need to do to be the best WOMAN you can be. Prioritize!

There's No Better Time To Be Prepared

Everywhere we turn we see advertisements and articles in the newspaper and other media publications that we NEED TO BE PREPARED. Do you listen? If I asked you if your family was prepared for a major or even not-so-major disaster, could you answer with a "yes"? Some of us may be able to... hesitantly. Some of us have had things prepared and plans set out but haven't checked or updated them in years. There's no time like the present to be ready. We grow up as children with an unconscious belief that we are indestructible and our world is a stable, safe environment. As mothers, we know in our heart of hearts that things may not always be that way. It doesn't hurt to be prepared and it may save you some major headaches or worse down the road. It takes some time and effort on your part to get to a point where you can say "yes, my family is ready". It takes time and effort on a regular basis (every few months) to be sure your family stays in that safety zone as time and life passes by. It's a website about child health and no, it's not WebMD or some other WEB doctor information; it's a site from Rady Children's Hospital so I can feel confident about the information they put on their site. I hope you were able to make it to our last meeting! If you missed it, Arlene Pellicane delivered an insightful message to us moms! I walked out of the meeting knowing that "I WILL WIN" the toe-to-toe battles that come about between myself and my child because I AM bigger, I AM stronger, and I AM wiser. No more sitting back and hoping that tantrums don't come and wishing that my child would listen the first or even second time! Just as Arlene described her own husband's attitude, tell yourself and your mom-rads to grab the situation by the reins and have the mental fortitude to be able to say "BRING IT"!
With that thought, I leave you my dear mom-rads, with what I hope can be a small smidgeon of extra strength for the week ahead... especially for those of you will have your school-aged young-ins home with you for the next two weeks as school is OUT for fall break!

Any professional whose primary responsibilities include caring for the needs of others is usually accompanied by wonderful relational benefits. These same occupations can be very emotionally and physically draining and require a plan for refueling. As we all know, motherhood has twenty-four-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week responsibilities.
While there are no designated days off, vacation time doesn't seem to be addressed in the job contract either. If we don't take some time for ourselves, if we don't arrange for a day off here or there or if we don't take an evening for ourselves, we will find ourselves in a hole that is difficult to climb out of. We may lose our perspective or even consider reentering the paid workforce just to keep our sanity. As a woman in the profession of motherhood, you must learn how to take care of yourself. No one has built that into your job description and no one is going to set boundaries for you. You have to do it yourself.
As moms, too often we work sacrificially and selflessly to the detriment of our family life. It is then that we become short-tempered, judgmental and even jealous of those who have more freedom in their lifestyles. We find ourselves discouraged with the daily duties of a job that never feels finished. We begin to question the value of what we're doing and our self-worth. To combat such reactive emotions, we need to be proactive in caring for ourselves.
Have you ever been on an airplane and listened to the instructions about using the oxygen masks in an emergency? The flight attendants always give special instructions to those traveling with children: Put your own oxygen mask in place before you place the mask on your child. Those directions seem to go against our very nature. Our first inclination is to take care of that child even if it means sacrificing ourselves. But when we stop to consider the reasoning behind the instruction, it makes sense. If we don't take care of ourselves first, we might not be able to help either one of us and we might both perish in those few precious moments. If we put our mask in place first, we are then in a position to care for others.
The same principle applies at home. We must first take care of ourselves in order to properly take care of others. This will give us the stamina, patience and perspective needed to care for the needs of others over the long haul.
Pull into the Filling Station
Do you have someone in your family who insists on driving the car on gas fumes when the gauge is registering empty? It seems every family has one member who pushes it to the limit. Well, each one of us has an emotional fuel tank. If we don't take time to fill our tank, if we push ourselves to the limit, sooner or later we will find ourselves "out of gas." Stranded. Stuck. Ineffective.
When we're broken down along the road, someone else has to come take care of us. By that time, it takes more to fill us up. If we're proactive, we do something to fill up while we can still pull up to the gas pump.
Moms are always taking care of others, but we have to make sure that in the whirlwind of life we're taking care of ourselves as well. There are three personal areas we need to care for: body, mind and spirit. Do you know how each of these is drained and filled? To keep our lives balanced, we need to evaluate these areas regularly and place emphasis on keeping our tanks filled as we do the job God has called us to do.

How do you teach your children about God’s Word and His commandments – particularly “Thou shalt not commit adultery” (Exodus 20:14)? How do you help them be sexually pure in their future relationships? Show them by example.

Give them a hug! That’s right! Hug them affectionately. Hug them supportively. Hug them tenderly. Hug them playfully. Even when that old teenage boy shrinks back and murmurs, “Oh Mom...” or “Oh Dad....” Just remember, he still wants a hug. And don’t forget to let your children see you hug your spouse!

Joyce and I were locked in a tight embrace when our grandchildren came in one day. They walked in the kitchen, stood there and stared awhile, then walked away. You could almost see the wheels turning in their heads, “What are they up to?” Well, that’s okay. They need to see us loving one another. They need to understand that in order to be huggable and lovable they don’t have to be sexually intimate.

Demonstrate your feelings of love and affection to both sons and daughters, and don’t stop once they reach adolescence. They long for your affirmation and appreciation. They will love you for it. More importantly, they will emulate your example when God gives them their own family.

"Directing TV's Role in Your Home" by Focus on the Family

Television viewing has grown steadily since the first sets were introduced in the late 1920s. American kids aged 2-18 now spend an average of 5:29 hours using media each day, with the lion's share of that attributed to TV. Studies show extensive viewing may be to blame for aggressive or violent behavior, poor academic performance, precocious sexuality, obesity and substance abuse.

How do you respond to these studies? Most parents fall somewhere between tossing out the TV and hiring it as a full-time babysitter. Thanks to a long-running public debate, we have a wealth of good advice to draw from. Here's some of the best:

Schedule viewing. Together, plan a weekly program schedule. This gives parents a chance to offer good choices instead of always saying no to poor ones, and to set time limits in a positive way.
Set physical limits on TV viewing. Turn the TV off during meals. Don't use the set for background noise (turn on some Bach or your local Christian music station instead). And if your child has a TV in his or her bedroom, consider removing it.
Watch TV together. Talk about any troubling issues as they arise, or take notes and discuss them afterward. Highlight positive behaviors. Point out unacceptable words and behaviors, and talk about the better way. Before watching new programs as a family, be sure to check them out yourself to see if there are any content concerns.
Talk back to the TV. When a character says or does something you don't agree with, say so out loud. This is especially helpful when troublesome commercials pop up during otherwise family-friendly shows. Saying, "That's not true!" reinforces your values to your children and helps them to challenge what they see and hear.
Plan weekly family nights. Turn off the TV and take out board games, go on a nature hike, play Frisbee, read books together, go out for ice cream. The key is to stay active as a family.
Use your VCR liberally. Preview new programs, edit out risqué or violent commercials, and choose optimum viewing times instead of being at the mercy of the broadcaster's schedule.
Be a good example. Ever had to grab for the remote when your child walked in? Take an honest look at your own viewing habits. What you do speaks so much louder than what you say.

We're gearing up for our 4th annual MOPS Spa Day on May 12th from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. It's a MOPS highlight of the year that you won't want to miss! We'll have manicures, pedicures, massages, and consultants from Mary Kay, Southern Living, Premier Jewelry, and Tastefully Simple. She holds English degrees from Liberty University and West Virginia University and has worked in various ministry positions including the pastoral staff of Flood Church. In 2003, Leeana married Steve Tankersley, an active duty Navy SEAL, and moved with him to the Middle East. Now working as a writer, Leeana's first book, Found Art: Discovering Beauty in Foreign Places, is a spiritual memoir about the year she and Steve lived overseas. Before becoming a mother, Arlene Pellicane worked as the Associate Producer for Turning Point Television with Dr. David Jeremiah. Her articles have been featured in Dr. Jeremiah’s Turning Points Magazine (circ 145,000). Prior to working at Turning Point, Arlene was an on-air features producer for The 700 Club. She has been featured on The Hour of Power and Turning Point Television.

Since she has been pregnant 5 times in her 30s, Arlene decided to develop this website and her audio book, Losing Weight After Baby: 31 Days to a New You to encourage moms. Arlene has 2 young children, she miscarried twice (once at 26 weeks) and is currently expecting due in October 09! PARENTS NIGHT OUT FUNDRAISER!

I have often heard at our MOPS meetings, "We haven't been on a date in a long time." Maybe it's because you don't have a babysitter, or because you just haven't scheduled it, or because money isn't growing off of your trees in your backyard and things are tight right now. Whatever the case, we want to encourage you to have a date night with your spouse during our first-ever Parents Night Out MOPS Fundraiser on Friday, October 9. Drop off your kids at Bonita Valley Community Church starting at 5:30 p.m., and we'll feed them dinner and watch them so you can go out and spend some quality time together, and you can pick them up by 9:00 p.m. to tuck them into bed.

The cost for this fundraiser is $10 for the first child, and $5 for each additional child. Reservations and pre-payment are required. Space is limited, but MOPS moms will have first priority before it is open to Bonita Valley Community Church members.

We're also looking for volunteers to help watch the kids. If you are able to help, please contact Beth at wbmodder@sbcglobal.net.

Our final playgroup of the MOPS season is Wednesday, May 20. Join us as we pick juicy, fresh strawberries at the Carlsbad Strawberry Company at 10:00 a.m. Located just off I-5 in Carlsbad, the Strawberry Company has been growing strawberries for over 50 years. The manager says "The berries are great this season!" Cost is a discounted $3.00 for a small bucket, and $6.00 for a large.

Directions: Take I-5 North to the Cannon Road exit. Turn right at the exit (east). Strawberry picking is at the corner of Cannon Rd. and Paseo del Norte.

You won't want to miss the most anticipated MOPS meeting of the year: our 3rd Annual MOPS Spa Day, Wednesday, May 13. We will be having a special extended meeting from 10:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in the Family Room of Bonita Valley Community Church (that's in the main building).

We have had so many great speakers this year, and our speaker this month is no exception. Santa Dominguez is no stranger to Bonita Valley. In fact, she was the Children's Director here for 2 years before moving back to Catalina Island with her family last summer, where her husband (also a former pastor at BVCC) returned as Pastor of the Catalina Bible Church.

Santa is also a former nurse and served as Children's Pastor of a church in New York, before returning to San Diego. When she left BVCC, I asked her if she was going to be the children's pastor in Catalina, and she replied, "No, I just want to be a mom." She is currently homeschooling her 3 children.

Santa has a very special heart for women, and she is sure to bring a challenge to us this week!

Meet our March Speaker, Karen Bender!

Join us this Wednesday, March 25 as Karen Bender shares her message: "Super-Mom Stives for Balance!" Karen is a wife and mother of two energetic boys, ages 4 and 6. She attends Faith Community Church in San Diego, and has been involved with leadership in their MOPS group for many years. She finds balance in her own life by enjoying activities such as volleyball and singing. Karen has a Masters degree from UCSD, and was a Chemistry Instructor at several San Diego community colleges, before she became a full-time mom. We are looking forward to having her with us!

Easter Egg Hunt Coming for your MOPETTS!

On Wednesday, April 8, your children in our MOPETTS program will have an Easter Egg hunt. They will be making their own baskets on March 25 and we will keep them at the church until the next meeting. All we need from you is to bring 10 filled Easter eggs per child from home, so that each child will leave with 10. These can be filled with candy, stickers, etc. Please avoid anything with peanuts, as as have some children who are allergic to them. The kids always enjoy this fun activity!

Our topic this week is the Help adventure: Help can come in different ways for us as moms. Sometimes you are in a position to offer help to those around you, but sometimes you are the one who needs help, and you may be a bit shy about asking for help.

Meet Our February Guest Speaker!

Join us Wednesday, February 25 as we welcome Wes Modder as our guest speaker. Wes will bring a very candid, but relevant topic for today: Real Sex: Christian Sex Without the Guilt. He'll be discussing what women need to understand about men and themselves, and how faith plays a part in sexual intimacy.

Wes has served as a US Navy Chaplain for almost 9 years, and is currently the Force Chaplain for Naval Special Warfare. Prior to to entering the Navy, he was enlisted in the US Marine Corps for 8 years.

His education credentials include a Bachelor of Science degree in Pastoral Studies from North Central University, Minneapolis, MN; a Masters of Divinity in Pastoral Ministries from Bethel Theological Seminary, St. Paul, MN; he is currently working to complete his Doctorate of Ministry at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, CA. Rev. Modder is endorsed and ordained by the General Council of the Assemblies of God, from the Minnesota District to serve as a Navy Chaplain. During his educational years Wes served as a youth pastor, college pastor and pastor in several churches. He also served as a Chaplain for the Washington County Sheriff and Ramsey County Sheriff Departments in Minnesota.

Beth and Wes have been married nearly 15 years and have 3 children, James (8), Julia (6), and Joy(3).

You may not have realized our speaker for this month has been sitting among us since last September. Stacy Shea is a Navy wife who has lived in California for just over three years. She’s the mother of a busy two year old little boy, Chance, and has two older step children, Autumn, 11 and Garrett, 8. Before she became a mother, she worked for 15 years in the financial services industry, primarily as a wealth management advisor. Stacy has been extremely involved in physical fitness for the last 10 years, including competitive body building in the Miss Figure category. She is working toward certification as a personal trainer and plans to specialize in helping other mothers to define and reach their fitness and health goals. She is also currently serving as the command family ombudsman for her husband’s command and finds many rewards in serving Navy families.

First meeting and Playgroup of the year

The Bonita Valley MOPS have started off the year with a great first meeting and playgroup. We would like so share some pictures from both activities.

Our first meeting was filled with great fellowship and a wonderful life lesson from our Mentor Mom Cathy Thornton. We also introduced our Leadership team for this 2008-2009 year.

The first playgroup was held at Cottonwood Park and we had a great turn out for our first playgroup of the year.

If you were with us for our first meeting, we hope you enjoyed time with us. We were glad to see both new and returning faces! If you couldn't join us, we hope to see you next time on the 24th, and we'll get you caught up with all the information you'll need to know for the upcoming year.

Becky Mason, our Membership Coordinator, will take your registration papers and fees beginning at the next meeting. Checks can be made out to BVCC MOPS (you can also pay by cash too!). If it is helpful to break up the fee in increments, please see her to make those arrangements, and she will be happy to help you. If you know you will not be to be at most meetings, but would still like to come join us for the day, the cost will be $5.00, which will cover childcare, craft, and food costs for the day. Until you are in the "system" as a registered MOPS Mom, please send an email to Beth at bvccmops@cox.net by the Monday before the meeting to reserve a spot for your child/ren. This way, we will know how many to anticipate. After you are registered, your kids will have a standing reservation for MOPPETS, and you will not need to reserve a spot for them.
